Halloween 2012

Remember how amazeballs Halloween was in West Hollywood last year? Well, this Halloween was pretty amazeballs too. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: this town puts on the grandest costume party IN THE WORLD.

This is a town filled to the brim with creative professionals, costume designers and make-up artists. And Halloween brings out the crème de la crème of artistic talent – even from “civilians” who don’t work in the industry. I saw incredible handmade costumes of every sort: from Cap’n Crunch to “Binders of Women”…Castaway’s “Wilson” to Snow White and the Huntsman‘s ravenous witch…Peter Griffin to Lieutenant Dan…Beetlejuice to the Mona Lisa…Sam I Am and his green eggs and ham.

I even saw a Princess Leia Cookie Monster. No joke. More on that later.

My Angelenos really know how to BRING it. Personally, my fave costumes involve political statements and obscure movie characters that make you go, “Aha!” followed by a “wowwww” and nod of approval when you figure out who they are.

And of course, you can’t go wrong with any costume that involves a unitard.

Seriously. How awesome are unitards?

I myself did not don a unitard, sorry to say (maybe next year). What I did do was 1) buy a children’s cookie monster costume, 2) take a pair of scissors to it, 3) get crafty with a bra top, and 3) throw on a tutu.

With cookies in hand, I hit Santa Monica Boulevard with my Tweety Bird sister, my color crayon bestie, and my favorite vampire Swede. The one-mile stretch from La Cienega to Doheny was packed with hundreds of THOUSANDS of people reveling in each other’s costumes and dancing to live music. Hard to believe it’s only one mile because it takes hours to get through! Every half a step I took, I was squealing over the brilliance and detail of someone’s costume and stopping to take photos. There were bands playing at every couple blocks, dance parties all over the place, and the smell of bacon-wrapped hotdogs wafting through the air. Happy faces everywhere and the energy was indescribable.

You have to experience it for yourself to really feel the magnitude of awesomisity. It’s off the charts! Some of the photos below I took at various house parties in the hills, but the majority of this Halloween goodness is from the West Hollywood Costume Carnaval. enjoy!

And here’s that Princess Leia Cookie Monster i promised you, along with more of my fellow Sesame Street pals.
